Carterton Masterplan
The Carterton Masterplan is a landscape-led vision to address regional housing supply issues and stimulate the local economy. As is the case with projects of this scale, the vision has been in the planning stage for several years, culminating in the submission of an outline planning application of up to 1,000 homes. This injection of new homes for West Oxfordshire, was designed to be delivered over a 10 year phased development plan. The strategy or gaining one large development consent as opposed to piecemeal sprawling developments, can facilitate the front-loading of essential new amenities and employment opportunities to benefit the Town’s existing residents.
The development opportunity was conceived by WWA, who approached the landowners and put together a landscape-led development plan before the appointment of Crest Nicholson as lead developer.
Our team acted as town planners, along with heritage consultants. In addition, we handled the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and assisted with the engagement and consultation work. The images below were produced as part of the community consultation exercise to communicate the invigoration of the existing town centre, and landscape-led nature of the masterplan.
Expert consultants in landscape, transport and ecology were employed to form the consultant team and work with us in delivering this exciting scheme. The collaboration between urban designers and ecologists on such a large site was particularly rich and inspiring, with a substantial landscape/ecology buffer zone characterising the design.
Through this project, and others, developer Crest Nicholson have been exploring and promoting a revival of garden city principles to create a green and open environment. It takes a mature understanding of history to bring people on board with a vision for the future. At WWA we really get under the skin of a project from the history and heritage, to forward looking integrated smart city infrastructure and this is made possible through a wide breadth of in house expertise.
