South London SEN School

Following our involvement in other specialist SEN facilites, WWA were approached by an SEN School in South London to undertake a campus masterplan feasibility study. The masterplan objective was to deliver new facilities that would offer support and education for young adults with profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex medical needs. As part of the vision, the school wanted to upgrade their existing aqua-therapy facilities and provide a specialist pool similar to the one WWA had previously designed at an SEN School in Surrey.

Our approach was to provide a double-height space connecting the existing school and the proposed extension, bringing in light that diffuses through the space, minimising reflective surfaces and creating clear lines of sight through the building and in connection with surrounding landscape features. The scheme places facilities for the young adults on the ground floor to keep a direct connection with the school, with staffing areas situated on the first floor. The young adult facility was located to the rear of the site to minimise noice from the road and to be adjacent to the proposed sensory gardens crafting a strong connection with nature.

WWA have worked with a number of different schools on spaces for SEN children and young adults – you can read more by clicking the following links to our Surrey SEN School project page, and Shropshire SEN School Project page.
